Should You Include Your Dog in Your Family Photos?
I get it… your dog is your ride-or-die, cuddle buddy, and overall shadow. So when you start dreaming about your next family photo session in the Boston area, it only makes sense to imagine your dog right there with you. I LOVE the idea. Here are a few things to think about before your four-legged family member is groomed, dressed, and ready for their close-up :)
Things to Consider Before Bringing Your Dog to a Family Photo Session:
1. Know Your Dog
Is your dog great in new environments? Do they freak out around loud noises, new people, or crowds? Can they handle a camera lens pointed their way without turning into a tornado of fur and nerves? Not every pup thrives at a professional photo session and that’s okay.
2. Bring Along a Buddy to Be Your “Handler”
Do you want your dog in every photo or just a few…this totally depends on your personnel vision for your photo session and the temperament of your dog. There may also be a point when they need a walk, some water, or a moment to decompress. When possible, it’s a great idea to bring along a trusted person who can care for your dog if they need to bow out while we continue photographing. Dogs will be dogs. They bark. They get bored. They poop. Be sure to have cleanup supplies, treats, and water ready.
3. Consider the Rules of the Location
Not every location allows dogs. I can help you choose the perfect photo session spot based on their rules around pet restrictions, leash requirements, available space for breaks, and how crowded it tends to be on any given day.
4. Embrace, Enjoy, and Plan for the Unexpected
Families who commission me are rarely looking for lots of photos of everyone standing in a line, staring into my lens. Sure, I’ll direct a few of those classic portraits, but most families hire me to capture the unscripted moments and authentic connection. I find that the presence of your four-legged family member helps the rest of your crew relax, especially older children and teens!
5. Outfit or No Outfit?
A velvet bowtie or floral collar can be ridiculously cute!!! An absolute ridiculous level of cuteness. Just make sure whatever your put your doggy in is comfortable, breathable, and safe. No itchy materials or tight straps. Definitely nothing that restricts movement or causes them to overheat.
At the end of the day, your dog is family. Whether they’re front and center or just make a quick cameo, I’m here! Let’s create something real and fun to mark this chapter of your family story.
